Biden overlooks violations of Israel’s Gaza actions

(MENAFN) According to reports, former U.S. President Joe Biden received intelligence suggesting that Israeli leaders were aware their actions in Gaza could breach both U.S. and international law, yet he declined to scale back American support.

The intelligence, described as originating from Israel’s own internal assessments, evaluated whether operations such as “large-scale attacks and severe humanitarian aid restrictions” amounted to unlawful treatment of Palestinians, according to former officials.

One former official revealed that the information was considered so “serious and sensitive” it triggered an urgent interagency meeting involving Biden. During the discussion, the president and his team reportedly weighed potential actions, including reducing intelligence-sharing with Israel to avoid possible U.S. legal exposure. Another source noted that the material “showed how aware the government of Israel was about the illegality.”

Additionally, Secretary of State Antony Blinken was said to have raised concerns that Israel might be engaging in ethnic cleansing—a term that a senior State Department official described as being “regularly used by agency officials to describe Israeli actions.”

The intelligence allegedly offered insight into “specific motivations” of Israeli officials, according to a former senior source. Despite this, staff within the State Department and USAID who argued that continued U.S. assistance could amount to knowingly breaking the law were reportedly rebuffed by their superiors.

A former official added that some policymakers feared that advocating for limits on U.S. support to Israel could jeopardize their “future career prospects.”

Reports noted that neither Biden nor Blinken commented on the claims, and both the Israeli embassy and the U.S. State Department did not respond to requests for comment.

Since October 2023, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has killed more than 69,000 people—mostly women and children—and left over 170,600 injured, according to local authorities.
