Spain’s Tenerife rough seas result in three deaths, fifteen injuries

(MENAFN) Three people lost their lives and fifteen others sustained injuries in multiple accidents caused by violent waves off the coast of Tenerife, according to local emergency officials.

The Canary Islands, including Tenerife, remained under a coastal hazard alert as strong waves battered the region.

The most severe incident unfolded at Roque de las Bodegas beach in Taganana, located within the municipality of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, when a powerful wave swept six French tourists into the ocean, according to reports.

Rescue teams quickly responded, dispatching a medical helicopter and two ambulances equipped for basic life support. One woman, described as having moderate injuries, was airlifted to Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria University Hospital. Four others with minor wounds were also hospitalized, while a sixth person received treatment at the scene.

Authorities said the group had ignored a safety barrier that had been installed due to dangerous sea conditions.

Additional incidents linked to the rough surf occurred across Tenerife’s coast throughout the day, leading to further casualties, according to reports.

Officials have called on both locals and visitors to stay away from coastal zones until the weather stabilizes.
