Palestinian child dies from unexploded Israeli munition in Gaza

(MENAFN) A Palestinian child was killed in southern Gaza after detonating an unexploded Israeli munition, reports said Saturday. The explosion occurred in Khan Younis, highlighting the continuing dangers posed by remnants of previous Israeli military operations.

Even though a ceasefire has halted active fighting, unexploded shells and rockets left behind continue to threaten lives. Palestinian authorities estimate that around 20,000 unexploded munitions remain scattered across the Gaza Strip, with clearance operations potentially taking 20 to 30 years.

Efforts to bring in the necessary demining equipment have so far been blocked. Children remain especially vulnerable in Gaza, now described as an open minefield, due to their limited awareness of the deadly hazards posed by leftover ordnance.
