Putin-Trump Meeting Conditions Still Unfulfilled, Ryabkov Says
(MENAFN) A planned summit between President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump remains on hold, as Russia says key conditions for the meeting have yet to be satisfied.
"Any summit meeting requires in-depth preparation and careful consideration of all aspects. As of today, neither the first nor the second condition for organizing this meeting has been met," Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told lawmakers on Wednesday at a session in the State Duma in Moscow.
Ryabkov emphasized that while Russian and US foreign ministries continue preparatory work, the immediate focus is refining the framework that both leaders agreed upon in mid-August.
Despite the absence of a high-level meeting, the deputy minister confirmed that “the sides are in constant communication, with security issues occupying a central place on the agenda.”
Trump and Putin last convened in Alaska on Aug. 15 and later agreed to hold discussions in Budapest. The proposed summit, however, failed to materialize.
Earlier, the Kremlin had warned that the meeting required a “great deal of homework” and that leaders could not simply “meet for the sake of meeting.”
Ryabkov also pointed to lingering irritants in US-Russia relations, citing the closure of Russian diplomatic missions in 2017 and 2018 and demanding the return of confiscated property.
"The property must be returned. This is an irrevocable requirement. Even if they didn't disgrace themselves, they took away state property protected by diplomatic immunity, and they don't want to return it," he said.
On the topic of resuming direct flights between the two nations, Ryabkov stated that Russia supports their return but acknowledged that “no progress has been achieved so far.”
Asked about the root of current tensions with the West, he said the strain stems from "expansion to the east and complete disregard for Moscow's interests, primarily in the field of security."
"We have repeatedly called on our Western neighbors, but also not only neighbors, but those who belong to the collective West, to resolve the contradictions that they have created in the field of security, primarily European security," Ryabkov added.
