IAEA Chief Warns Trump’s Nuclear Testing Threatens Global Security

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump’s decision to restart nuclear weapons testing signals a worsening global crisis and undermines the international framework for peace and security, according to Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

In an interview with a broadcaster on Tuesday, Grossi characterized Trump’s announcement as a “manifestation of profound unease, tension, and increasing fragmentation,” emphasizing that such a move jeopardizes worldwide stability and the nuclear non-proliferation framework.

The previous week, Trump instructed the US Department of War to begin preparations for nuclear testing, asserting that the United States is “the only country that doesn’t test” while accusing Russia and China of carrying out “secret” nuclear explosions. Both Moscow and Beijing have rejected these accusations.

Grossi cast doubt on the truthfulness of Trump’s assertions, underlining that any nuclear detonations by other states would be detected through the international monitoring network established by the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.

The IAEA head stressed that the body tasked with ensuring compliance “can immediately record such phenomena.”

He urged the restoration of the United Nations’ central role in upholding global peace and reinforcing the nuclear non-proliferation framework in light of escalating geopolitical frictions.

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has withheld comments on Trump’s remarks, noting that Moscow is awaiting “clarifications from the American side.”

He reaffirmed that neither Russia nor China has resumed nuclear testing and both countries continue to honor their commitments under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.
