Türkiye Weighs Participation in Gaza Stabilization Force
(MENAFN) Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated on Monday that potential Turkish involvement in a proposed international stabilization mission for Gaza will rely on the exact terms of an upcoming UN Security Council resolution.
“What the countries we’ve spoken with have said is this: they will decide whether or not to send troops based on the content of the definition in the resolution expected from the UN Security Council,” Fidan explained during a press briefing following a conference on Gaza in Istanbul. The event gathered foreign ministers from Indonesia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan, as well as delegates from the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
Emphasizing that negotiations and multiple initiatives remain in progress, Fidan highlighted that participating nations insist the peacekeeping force must have its mission and legitimacy clearly established under the framework of a UN Security Council mandate.
“Countries will largely decide based on the mandate and authorities of the international stabilization force. I believe it would be difficult for them to send troops if the mandate conflicts with their own principles and policies,” he remarked.
Fidan further noted that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s statements on the matter “clearly show” Türkiye’s willingness to contribute to peace efforts and make the required commitments.
“However, it is also important that the resulting documents and framework are, frankly, of a nature that we can support. Therefore, our diplomatic contacts and efforts on this issue are continuing,” he concluded.
