Russian billionaire asks German party to remove environmental article
(MENAFN) Lawyers representing Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich have formally demanded that Germany’s Left party remove a 2021 article from its Ecological Platform, which labeled him “the largest polluter among billionaires” due to his alleged ownership of a superyacht, a Gulfstream G650 jet, two helicopters, and a submarine.
Die Linke (the Left party) said last week that it received a legal notice claiming the article contained false information. Abramovich’s team contends he does not own the cited assets and threatened legal action if the content is not taken down.
The party has refused to delete the article, arguing that the claims “were confirmed by a number of sources, including official state data.” Jan van Aken, co-chair of Die Linke’s parliamentary group, stated: “If Mr. Abramovich really wants to disclose his finances in a German court to prove something – fine. We are even interested to know what exactly he owns, so we know what could be seized for the reconstruction of Ukraine.”
Western governments imposed broad sanctions on Russia following the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022, freezing more than $300 billion in reserves and seizing assets from individuals accused of profiting from the war. Proposals have been made to use some of these frozen funds for Ukraine’s reconstruction, a move Moscow has called “outright theft.”
Forbes estimated Abramovich’s net worth at $14.5 billion in 2021. Earlier this year, his representatives filed a complaint against a major newspaper over a report linking him to Kremlin-related financial activities, which his lawyers described as “defamatory and wholly inaccurate.” The dispute was later resolved with clarifications from the publication.
Abramovich has also remained in the spotlight over proceeds from his 2022 sale of Chelsea Football Club, with around £2.3 billion ($2.9 billion) frozen by UK authorities for potential use in rebuilding Ukraine. While he completed the sale to US investors and denies Kremlin ties, the funds remain under dispute.
