Ukraine, Russia Trade Accusations of Overnight Drone Strikes
(MENAFN) Rival accusations flew Sunday as both nations reported devastating overnight drone strikes that left casualties in Ukraine's Odesa region and crippled power grids while inflicting damage on Russian energy infrastructure.
Ukraine's State Emergency Service released a Telegram statement confirming that Russian drone bombardment ignited a blaze in a truck-filled parking facility, which firefighters subsequently contained.
"According to preliminary information, two people died, another person was injured," the statement said.
Power outages struck nearly 58,000 residents in Zaporizhzhia following the aerial assault, according to Governor Ivan Fedorov.
Ukrainian air defense systems intercepted 67 out of 79 attack drones alongside two Iskander-M ballistic missiles that Russia deployed during the nocturnal offensive, Ukraine's Air Force confirmed.
"One ballistic missile and 12 strike drones were recorded at six locations, as well as the fall of downed fragments at two locations," the statement said.
Meanwhile, Russia's Krasnodar region reported infrastructure damage after debris from neutralized Ukrainian drones crashed into an oil terminal and tanker at Tuapse port, the local operational headquarters announced via Telegram.
"According to preliminary information, there are no injuries. Emergency services are working at the scene," it said, adding that a nearby railway station building was also damaged.
Authorities later confirmed two foreign-flagged civilian ships sustained damage during the attack, though specifics remained undisclosed.
Russia's Defense Ministry claimed air defense units destroyed 183 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions during a 12-hour window spanning midnight to Sunday midday (2100GMT to 0900GMT), with 46 intercepted over Krasnodar alone.
The intensifying energy infrastructure attacks from both sides have surged dramatically in recent months as freezing winter temperatures loom over the conflict zone.
