US Lawmakers Remain Stalled as Government Shutdown Continues
(MENAFN) Lawmakers from both the Republican and Democratic parties in the United States remain at an impasse over a government funding deal, prolonging what has become the nation’s second-longest shutdown.
The Senate is not scheduled to reconvene until Monday afternoon, by which time the shutdown will have persisted for 34 days.
As of Saturday, "Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)" benefits were expected to stop, and enrollment for "Affordable Care Act (ACA)" plans is projected to face significantly higher premiums. Democrats, however, have attempted to restore SNAP benefits through legal challenges.
The ongoing shutdown has caused delays for food stamp recipients, and several federal assistance programs are exhausting their funds.
Congress remains divided over whether to continue enhanced ACA subsidies, which, if allowed to lapse, could dramatically increase health care expenses.
Republican leaders argue that Democrats are waiting until after Tuesday’s Election Day before agreeing to their demand for extended subsidies in a funding bill.
Conversely, sources close to top Democrats have indicated the party plans to maintain its stance, a news agency reported.
Tuesday marks an "off-year" US Election Day, featuring a relatively small number of races, though several high-profile contests, including governor’s races in New Jersey and Virginia, are drawing attention.
