Abu Dhabi Police Warn Motorists Of Dh400 Fine For Covering Vehicle Number Plate

Abu Dhabi Police have advised motorists against covering vehicle plate numbers with bike racks or any other objects, citing federal traffic law. The law states that those who have an unclear vehicle licence plate will be subject to a fine of Dh400.

The police stressed that traffic control will be intensified across the emirate to ensure compliance, and legal action will be taken against any vehicle found with obscured plates.

Authorities said the move is aimed at enhancing road safety and maintaining clear identification of vehicles for enforcement and security purposes. Motorists are urged to ensure that their number plates are clearly visible at all times.

The UAE Federal Decree‐Law No. 14 of 2024 issues a number of regulations on traffic rules, including provisions on the misuse of licence plates. Under Article 21, no vehicle may be driven unless its licence plate is properly affixed in accordance with the terms and specifications set out in the Executive Regulations. Authorities stress that compliance is mandatory, with violations attracting strict penalties.

Under Article 34, the law defines penalties for misuse of a licence plate. Whoever commits any of the following acts shall be punished by imprisonment and a fine of not less than Dh20,000, or by either of these two penalties:

  • Forging or imitating a Licence Plate or using a forged or imitated Licence Plate.

  • Distorting, obliterating or altering the data of a Licence Plate while using it for the purpose for which it was prepared.

  • Allowing others to use a Licence Plate, knowing that it has been obliterated, defaced or altered.

  • Transferring a Licence Plate from one vehicle to another without the approval of the Licensing Authority.

  • Installing a Licence Plate or assisting or facilitating its installation in violation of the provisions of this Decree-Law and its Executive Regulations.
