Death Toll from Kenya Landslide Climbs to Twenty-One
(MENAFN) At least 21 people have died and more than 30 remain missing after a landslide swept through Kenya’s Elgeyo Marakwet East region in the Rift Valley, following days of heavy rainfall, Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen reported late Saturday.
Elgeyo Marakwet East is located roughly 320 kilometers (200 miles) northwest of Nairobi, the country’s capital.
Murkomen said 25 critically injured victims were airlifted to Eldoret for specialized medical treatment, while those with minor injuries received care locally.
“We have confirmed the loss of 21 people to this tragedy, while over 30 people are still unaccounted for as reported by their families,” he said. “The search and rescue mission resumes tomorrow with a team from the military and the police joining other organizations and the local community in the effort.”
Authorities are preparing to deliver additional food and non-food aid to affected families, with helicopters from the military and police ready to assist with transport.
“I urge people living near seasonal rivers and areas that experienced landslides to move to safer grounds,” said Murkomen.
Officials have called on residents in high-risk zones to follow evacuation orders as rescue operations continue in Elgeyo Marakwet.
Recent heavy rains have triggered flooding and landslides across multiple counties, displacing hundreds of people and damaging critical infrastructure.
