Srinagar- Leader of Opposition (LoP) and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sunil Sharma on Thursday demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into an alleged multi-crore scam in the Public Works (R&B) Department and called for the resignation of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

Speaking to reporters outside the Assembly Secretariat, Sharma said a local newspaper had exposed major financial irregularities in a government scheme, raising serious questions about corruption at the top level.

“On one hand, the government claims to be committed to employment and development, but on the other, it is caught in scams worth crores. The division mentioned in the report falls under a specific constituency - the government should clarify who the MLA is and whether he also serves as a minister. If that minister holds late-night meetings with Omar Abdullah, what is being discussed - governance or deals?” Sharma alleged.

The LoP said it was shocking that such large-scale corruption had surfaced in less than a year.“We expected immediate action, but there has been none. We demand a CBI inquiry. This is not limited to one division - there are several such cases across departments,” he said.

Quoting media reports, Sharma alleged that tenders were allotted to a single contractor, calling it a blatant misuse of authority.“Strange things are happening under this government. Why is there no CBI probe despite such massive losses to the exchequer? This exposes the real face of Omar Abdullah's administration,” he said.

He further added that corruption was the“biggest disease in society”, affecting even the poorest.“If public money was used properly, many issues like casual labourers' pending regularisation could have been resolved,” Sharma said.
