Israel Approves Expansion of Settlements South of East Jerusalem
(MENAFN) Israel has authorized the development of 1,300 additional housing units in settlements situated to the south of occupied East Jerusalem, according to reports from Israeli media on Wednesday.
As stated by a broadcaster, the nation’s Special Planning and Building Committee within the Gush Etzion settlement bloc unanimously endorsed the project earlier this week.
This resolution follows less than seven days after U.S. President Donald Trump expressed disapproval of Israeli settlement construction in the occupied West Bank.
“Don’t worry about the West Bank. Israel’s not going to do anything with the West Bank,” Trump told journalists at the White House on Oct. 24.
His statement came just a day after the Israeli Knesset (parliament) gave initial approval to two proposed laws aimed at annexing the occupied West Bank and the Ma’ale Adumim settlement bloc — a step that would sever East Jerusalem from its Palestinian surroundings to the east and effectively divide the West Bank into two separate areas.
According to the broadcaster, the newly sanctioned settlement project marks an extraordinary expansion in the Har HaRusim neighborhood, located south of the Alon Shvut settlement, to the southwest of occupied East Jerusalem.
The Israeli blueprint also envisions the establishment of schools, public institutions, recreational parks, and a vast commercial area intended to cater to nearby settlements, the broadcaster added.
The Gush Etzion Regional Council welcomed the decision, describing the initiative as “an appropriate response to the large number of residents seeking to live in the area.”
