(MENAFN- Newsroom Panama) Sinaproc reported this Tuesday, October 28, on multiple impacts in different regions of Panama due to heavy rains and adverse conditions associated with Hurricane Melissa. Authorities are constantly monitoring rivers and areas prone to flooding and landslides. The National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) declared a Red Alert starting at 6:00 p.m. on Monday for several areas of the country due to increased rainfall, overflowing rivers, and landslides that have affected several communities. The measure covers the southern districts of Soná and La Palma (Veraguas), the districts of Tonosí and Mariato (Los Santos), as well as Barú, Renacimiento and Tierras Altas (Chiriquí), according to the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN).

In addition, a yellow alert was declared in the Ngäbe Buglé region following the death of two girls, ages 5 and 8, who were swept away by a head of water caused by a swollen river. Sinaproc reported that several families have been evacuated and moved to temporary shelters, where they are receiving basic assistance and humanitarian care from inter-institutional response teams. With the declaration of Red Alert, all human, logistical, and operational resources of the civil protection system and government entities are activated to ensure a rapid and coordinated response to potential emergencies.

Authorities continue to monitor river levels and assess damage and needs in areas affected by the rains. Sinaproc recommended that the population stay informed through official channels, avoid crossing rivers or ravines, not travel through areas prone to landslides or flooding, and prepare a family emergency plan. Likewise, he asked to report any risk situation to 911 or to the provincial lines of Sinaproc, reiterating his commitment to keep operational personnel deployed in the field to provide timely attention.
