UN chief expresses doubt over credibility of coming voting in Myanmar
(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres voiced strong doubts about the credibility of Myanmar’s upcoming elections, calling instead for greater humanitarian aid and an end to ongoing conflict, according to reports.
“I don't think anybody believes that those elections will be free and fair,” Guterres said during a press briefing in Malaysia on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits.
The Myanmar military authorities have scheduled national elections for December 28 — the first since seizing power in a February 2021 coup.
“I don't think anybody believes those in elections will contribute to the solution of the problems of Myanmar,” said Guterres.
He urged the international community to prioritize humanitarian support and work toward restoring civilian governance. “I think this is the moment in which we need to increase humanitarian assistance, to stop the violence, and at the same time to pave the way for a political evolution leading to civilian rule and to respect for a constitutional form of government,” he added.
Myanmar last held democratic elections in November 2020, when the National League for Democracy won by a wide margin. That government was later toppled by the military takeover, plunging the nation into years of instability and emergency rule.
