China, India Restart Direct Flights After Five Years
(MENAFN) China and India reopened direct air travel on Sunday, ending a five-year hiatus, with a new daily non-stop service linking Guangzhou and Kolkata.
India’s largest airline, IndiGo, operated the first flight from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (NSCBI) in Kolkata to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, carrying 176 passengers.
The Indian government said the resumption of flights will enhance “people-to-people contact” and support the “gradual normalization of bilateral exchanges.”
A separate route connecting Shanghai and New Delhi is scheduled to launch on Nov. 9, operating three flights weekly.
Air travel between the two nations had been suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic and was further delayed after a June 2020 clash in the Galwan Valley of the Himalayas. The confrontation over infrastructure and patrolling left 20 Indian soldiers dead and an unconfirmed number of Chinese casualties.
Bilateral tensions persisted until an October 2024 agreement eased pressures along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
