EU urges Israel to respect truce, condemns Israeli attack on UN force
(MENAFN) The European Union has strongly condemned Israel’s recent strike on United Nations peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, calling for strict adherence to the existing ceasefire and urging Israel to withdraw its forces from Lebanese territory.
According to official statements, the EU said the Israeli attack on Oct. 26 struck a unit of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), describing it as “the latest in a series of similar incidents in recent weeks.”
“The safety and security of UN personnel and premises must be ensured in accordance with international law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701,” the bloc stated.
The EU reiterated its call for calm and urged all parties to comply with the ceasefire arrangement established on Nov. 26, 2024. It also called on Israel “to withdraw from the entire Lebanese territory.”
UNIFIL has been deployed in southern Lebanon since 1978 and was expanded following the 2006 conflict between Israel and Hezbollah under the same UN resolution.
Despite the truce reached in late 2024, Israel has continued conducting airstrikes across Lebanon, asserting that its operations target Hezbollah positions.
Under the terms of the ceasefire, Israeli forces were required to complete their withdrawal from southern Lebanon by January 2025. However, reports indicate that the pullout has been only partial, with Israeli troops still stationed at five border outposts.
