Russia Acknowledges Trump’s Efforts on Ukraine
(MENAFN) Russia has expressed appreciation for US President Donald Trump’s efforts to resolve the ongoing Ukraine crisis as soon as possible, but maintains that no quick-fix solution is feasible.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov emphasized that Moscow believes the root causes of the conflict must be fully addressed before any lasting resolution can be achieved.
In an interview with Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin on Sunday, Peskov remarked that "Trump’s sincere wish to resolve all acute crises, including the one surrounding Ukraine, surely brings out only positive feelings, and [Russian President Vladimir] Putin has said that repeatedly."
However, Peskov cautioned that "sometimes such excessive haste actually sharply contrasts with reality, because a conflict like the Ukraine one… is so complex that it cannot be resolved overnight."
Peskov also noted that peace talks have been temporarily suspended, as both Kiev and its European allies are currently uninterested in resuming negotiations.
Regarding the possibility of a new summit between Presidents Putin and Trump, which had been suggested after their phone conversation earlier this month, the Kremlin spokesperson stated that such a meeting should not be held just for the sake of holding it. Neither side is inclined to engage in talks that would waste time, he emphasized.
According to Peskov, the two leaders have tasked their senior diplomats – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio – with laying the groundwork for future negotiations.
He concluded by stating that "The process is complex and requires both sides to do substantial preparatory work before top-level negotiations can take place."
