Trump calls off planned summit with Putin
(MENAFN) According to reports, US President Donald Trump has called off his proposed meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest, stating that he does not believe the discussions would produce meaningful results at this point. Moscow has not yet responded to the announcement.
Trump made the decision public during a White House meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Wednesday, explaining that the summit “did not feel right.”
“It did not feel like we were going to get to the place we have to get, so I canceled it,” he said.
Despite canceling the immediate meeting, Trump left the possibility of future talks open, noting, “But we will do it [the summit] in the future,” without providing details on timing or location.
The announcement comes shortly after the US Treasury Department introduced new sanctions on Russia, citing its “lack of serious commitment to a peace process.” These measures target two of Russia’s major oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, along with their subsidiaries.
Trump acknowledged uncertainty over whether the fresh sanctions would influence Russia’s position regarding the conflict in Ukraine.
“Hopefully he [Putin] will become reasonable, and hopefully [Ukraine’s Vladimir] Zelensky will be reasonable too,” he said. “It takes two to tango.”
Plans for a summit between the two leaders had been floated following a recent phone call, although no official date had been finalized. A Kremlin spokesperson had previously emphasized that any Russia-US meeting would require “serious preparations,” underlining that such a summit “should not be wasted,” as both presidents “are accustomed to working for a result.”
