Inmates Threaten Sarkozy with Revenge for Gaddafi

(MENAFN) Inmates at Paris' La Santé prison have reportedly issued threats of retaliation against former French President Nicolas Sarkozy over the demise of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, as suggested by a cellphone video from the facility.

Sarkozy, aged 70, began serving his five-year sentence this Tuesday after being convicted by a Paris court for criminal conspiracy in a plot to finance his 2007 presidential campaign with funds from Gaddafi.

Sarkozy, who later led a NATO-backed operation that ousted Gaddafi, which ultimately resulted in the leader's death, is now facing this backlash.

Videos filmed at La Santé prison surfaced on Tuesday, showing supposed inmates shouting threats and taunting Sarkozy, who is currently incarcerated in solitary confinement.

In one video shared on social media, a man can be heard shouting, "We will avenge Gaddafi! We know everything, Sarko! Return the billions of dollars!”

The video also suggested that Sarkozy, isolated in his cell, would endure a difficult time during his imprisonment, with the individual stating, "He’s all alone in his cell. He just arrived... he’s going to have a bad time."

In response to the apparent danger, French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez emphasized that additional security measures are being taken to protect Sarkozy.

Two police officers will be stationed permanently in cells adjacent to the former president’s to ensure his safety.

“The former president of the republic is entitled to protection because of his status. There is obviously a threat against him, and this protection is being maintained while he is in detention,” Nunez explained during an interview on a radio on Wednesday.
