Trump Questions Value of Budapest Meeting with Putin

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has expressed doubts about the usefulness of his proposed summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, suggesting the upcoming discussions in Budapest might not be worth the effort if they fail to yield results.

Speaking on Tuesday, Trump addressed concerns raised after US media reported that the anticipated meeting — scheduled during a recent phone conversation between the two leaders — had been temporarily halted.

“I don’t want to have a wasted meeting, I don’t want to have a wasted time, so I’ll see what happens,” Trump remarked to reporters while in the Oval Office.

When asked by a reporter why he believed the meeting “might be a wasted time,” Trump clarified, “I didn’t say it would. You never know what is going to happen. A lot of things are happening on the war front with Ukraine and Russia. We’ll be notifying you over the next two days as to what we are doing.”

However, he declined to confirm whether the summit had been officially canceled or simply postponed.

The two leaders last met face-to-face in Alaska back in August. Although that encounter didn’t result in any significant agreements, both parties described the dialogue as a constructive move toward resolving the Ukraine conflict and improving bilateral relations.

On Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone conversation to discuss possibilities for “collaborat[ion] on advancing a durable resolution to the Russia-Ukraine war,” according to the State Department.
