Dutch Regulator Warns of AI Chatbots for Election Guidance

(MENAFN) The Dutch data privacy authority, known as the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens (AP), has cautioned the public not to depend on AI-powered chatbots for guidance ahead of the upcoming national elections.

The agency emphasized that these technologies often offer misleading or untrustworthy responses and may unintentionally guide voters toward two dominant opposition groups.

The AP revealed that chatbot-generated recommendations were heavily skewed in favor of two leading political factions — the right-leaning Party for Freedom (PVV) and the left-wing GroenLinks-PvdA coalition.

These two parties made up 56% of the chatbot suggestions, a disproportionate figure considering the Netherlands' diverse 15-party parliamentary system.

Despite this bias, opinion surveys suggest that together, these two blocs are likely to capture just over one-third of the votes in the October 29 elections.

The watchdog's findings also noted that some political parties — particularly the center-right CDA — “are almost never mentioned, even when the user’s input exactly matches the positions of one of these parties.” This suggests that the technology overlooks smaller or less-prominent parties, even when their policies align with a voter’s input.

“Chatbots may seem like clever tools, but as a voting aid, they consistently fail,” said Monique Verdier, the agency’s vice-chair.

She further criticized the systems’ inner workings as “unclear and difficult to verify,” warning that their use could mislead voters into supporting parties that don’t truly represent their views.

“We therefore warn against using AI chatbots for voting advice,” Verdier added, stressing the risks of relying on such tools in the democratic process.

In its investigation, the AP evaluated four widely-used AI chatbots — although their names were not disclosed — and found that the systems occasionally recommended voting for one of the two dominant parties even when they were specifically given the platform of a minor political group.
