Trump casts his doubt on Cuomo’s winning NYC mayor race
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump expressed skepticism Tuesday about former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s chances in the New York City mayoral race, suggesting Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani appears poised to secure the position.
Trump said that according to current polling, "it's not looking too good" for Cuomo. He added that even if Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa were to exit the race, Mamdani would likely still prevail in the November election.
"I don't know, if he dropped out, maybe Cuomo would have a little bit of a chance, but not much, because it looks like the lead is, it's not a great lead, but it's big enough that he should be able to win," Trump commented regarding Mamdani.
Recent polling from AARP and Gotham Polling & Analytics shows Mamdani leading Cuomo by 14 points in a three-way contest. Should Sliwa withdraw, Mamdani’s advantage would narrow to a 45% to 41% lead over Cuomo, which falls within the poll’s four-point margin of error.
Mamdani has consistently led in surveys that include all three candidates, while in head-to-head matchups against Cuomo, the former governor comes out ahead in only two of six tracked polls. Notably, the polls favoring Cuomo were conducted in July, with the remainder taken in September.
If elected, Mamdani would become both the first Muslim and the first South Asian mayor of New York City. He secured the Democratic nomination in June by defeating Cuomo with a seven-point margin.
Early voting begins Saturday, with the official Election Day scheduled for November 4.
