French Court Upholds Political Ban on Marine Le Pen
(MENAFN) France’s top administrative tribunal on Wednesday dismissed an appeal by far-right figure Marine Le Pen, who aimed to prevent the immediate implementation of a five-year political disqualification following her corruption conviction.
The Council of State reviewed Le Pen’s challenge against a lower court’s judgment that barred her from holding any elected position, as reported by French media outlets.
The court confirmed the original ruling, ensuring that the political prohibition will be enforced without delay.
Back in March, the Paris Criminal Court found Le Pen guilty of misappropriating European Union funds and sentenced her to four years of imprisonment—two years suspended and two years under electronic surveillance—along with a fine of €100,000 ($116,491).
Additionally, the court imposed a five-year ban on her running for any public office.
Although Le Pen will avoid jail time, her legal team has filed an appeal against the decision.
She also petitioned the European Court of Human Rights for an interim suspension of the political ban; however, the court rejected her plea on July 9.
