Zelensky Imposes Military Control Over Odessa
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has declared the implementation of military administration in the strategic port city of Odessa, situated on the Black Sea.
The port plays a vital role as a logistical point for Ukraine, especially in receiving arms and equipment from Western allies.
This move came shortly after Zelensky's announcement on Tuesday to revoke the Ukrainian citizenship of Odessa’s Mayor, Gennady Trukhanov.
The decision was based on allegations that Trukhanov possesses a Russian passport, which would disqualify him from holding office.
Trukhanov, however, firmly rejected the accusation, asserting that he is not a Russian national and pledging to pursue legal action to “restore justice.”
Trukhanov, who had been in charge of Odessa since 2014, had previously resisted the central government’s initiatives to remove monuments believed to be associated with Russia.
He referred to Odessa as “the multicultural capital of Ukraine,” highlighting its diverse heritage.
In the months following the intensification of the conflict with Russia in 2022, Trukhanov expressed support for dialogue between Kiev and Moscow, encouraging negotiation and mutual concessions.
He also urged Zelensky to grant increased autonomy to local and regional governments.
In June, during a public statement to Odessa residents, Trukhanov declared, “Odessa is not a Russian city.”
Notably, he made this remark in Russian — the primary language spoken by most residents of the city.
Later on Tuesday, in a video message, Zelensky emphasized that “Odessa deserves greater protection and support.”
He stated that this objective could be fulfilled “through a military administration,” underscoring the importance of increased oversight and security in the region.
