Three Officers Killed in Gas Explosion in Italy

(MENAFN) A gas explosion in northern Italy during an early morning eviction operation killed three members of the carabinieri and left 15 others injured, according to media.

The blast took place as police and firefighters attempted to clear a foreclosed farmhouse where three siblings had barricaded themselves, reportedly releasing gas to prevent the eviction, media said.

All three fatalities were part of a specialized tactical unit deployed to carry out the evacuation. Emergency responders were already on site when the explosion tore through the building, injuring military personnel, police officers, and firefighters, local authorities confirmed.

"A terrible toll," said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi in a national television interview.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed condolences, praising the "valor and daily sacrifice of those who serve the State and its citizens."

An investigation is underway to determine the precise circumstances behind the blast. The incident has prompted widespread grief and renewed calls for stronger safety protocols in high-risk law enforcement operations.
