Iran Dismisses E3’s Push to Resume Nuclear Talks

(MENAFN) Iran on Monday dismissed the renewed push by France, Germany, and Britain—collectively known as the E3—to resume nuclear talks, accusing the trio of lacking genuine intent and credibility.

At a weekly press briefing, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei sharply criticized the E3’s recent joint statement, issued Friday, which reaffirmed their decision to trigger the snapback mechanism and reimpose United Nations sanctions on Iran.

Describing the E3’s move as a diplomatic setback, Baghaei stated that their remarks “include stereotypical propositions, of which some were irrelevant and some lacked goodwill and sincerity.”

The E3 leaders had characterized the August snapback as “the right” course of action and reiterated their commitment to “reinitiate negotiations with Iran and the United States toward a comprehensive, durable and verifiable agreement that ensures Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon.”

However, Baghaei pushed back strongly, accusing the European trio of derailing the diplomatic path by “abusing” the dispute resolution mechanism embedded in the 2015 nuclear accord. He warned that any future dialogue would hinge on the E3 demonstrating political independence and meaningful engagement.

“To be recognized as ‘credible’ parties in the negotiations,” he asserted, the E3 “should prove that they could act independently and had the necessary seriousness, diplomatic capability, and decision-making power.”

The snapback move, initiated in August, led to the UN reinstating sanctions after the Security Council declined to prolong the sanctions relief in September. Tehran has repeatedly condemned the reimposition, calling it “illegal and unjustified.”
