Russia Accuses U.S. of Plotting Venezuelan Regime Change
(MENAFN) Russian envoy to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, has leveled serious accusations against the United States, alleging that it is orchestrating a regime change in Venezuela disguised as a narcotics-control initiative.
According to him, Washington’s recent military activities — involving the deployment of marines and naval vessels near Venezuela's shoreline, along with airstrikes on supposed drug-trafficking boats — are part of a larger scheme.
These operations have already resulted in the sinking of four vessels and the deaths of more than 21 individuals.
The Venezuelan government has harshly criticized these actions, labeling them as a breach of national sovereignty and appealing for an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council.
Officials in Caracas have argued that the U.S. actions are not only targeting President Nicolas Maduro’s leadership but also imperil the stability of the broader region.
During the Security Council meeting on Friday, Nebenzia expressed Russia’s strong opposition to the American initiative, declaring that it represents “a flagrant violation of international law and human rights.”
He went on to say that the global community is witnessing “a brazen campaign of political, military, and psychological pressure” aimed at dislodging a government that the U.S. finds undesirable. According to him, this campaign employs familiar methods associated with “color revolutions and hybrid wars,” by deliberately generating a hostile and confrontational environment.
Nebenzia also mocked the American rationale for its actions, likening it to “a perfect plot for a Hollywood blockbuster,” where “Americans once again save the world.”
In his view, this narrative is entirely fictional. He pointed out that the UN Office on Drugs and Crime does not even recognize Venezuela as a central node in the global drug trade.
Citing statistics, he noted that 87% of cocaine entering the U.S. comes through the Pacific Ocean — a region to which Venezuela has no maritime connection.
