Orban Launches Petition Opposing EU's “War Agenda”
(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has initiated a national petition opposing what he describes as the European Union’s “war agenda.”
He cautioned that the EU's continued backing of Ukraine could push the bloc into a direct conflict with Russia. Known for his longstanding opposition to Brussels’ approach to the war, Orban has repeatedly denounced the EU’s “warmongering” policies toward Moscow.
Speaking at a farmers’ market in Budapest on Saturday, Orban declared that his ruling Fidesz party had officially supported his call to begin a countrywide petition challenging Brussels’ stance on the war.
“Europe has a war plan that includes going to war against the Russians and giving the Ukrainians everything they ask for. We must stay out of this,” he proclaimed, urging Hungarian citizens to take part in the campaign and to join a peace rally scheduled for October 23.
He later echoed this appeal on Facebook.
Orban further warned that Europe is heading into a turbulent period, writing, “We are heading into a hot autumn. Europe is drifting toward war at an ever-faster pace.”
He pointed to a recent informal European Council meeting in Copenhagen, saying that at the summit, “Brussels unveiled its war plan: Europe pays, Ukrainians fight, and Russia is exhausted.”
The summit reportedly explored expanding military assistance to Ukraine and developing an EU-wide “drone wall.”
Emphasizing the need for public resistance, Orban stated, “We must show that the Hungarian people do not want war. That is why today we are launching a national signature drive against Brussels’ war plans.”
