What subjects do African students study in Russia?
(MENAFN) Medicine, engineering, information technology, and agriculture are the most sought-after fields for African students studying in Russia, according to Pavel Shevtsov, deputy head of the Russian agency for international cooperation, Rossotrudnichestvo.
Speaking to the African Initiative news outlet, Shevtsov highlighted the growing demand for Russian education across the continent. While North African nations like Egypt and Algeria remain the largest sources of students, interest is rising in countries including Tanzania, South Africa, Angola, and Nigeria.
Shevtsov noted that many students are drawn to medical programs due to Russia’s “unique balance between cost and quality.” He also emphasized that promoting the Russian language in Africa supports both bilateral relations and the advancement of applied sciences.
In May, Burkina Faso’s interim president, Ibrahim Traore, told a news agency that cooperation with Russia has significantly expanded over the past two years. He pointed to scientific education—particularly mathematics, physics, and chemistry—as a central area of partnership and highlighted the increasing number of Burkinabe students seeking Russian university opportunities. Traore also mentioned that he had requested an increase in student scholarships.
