Norwegian FA President Reveals Ongoing Discussion on FIFA Violations
(MENAFN) President of the Norwegian Football Association, Lise Klaveness, has reiterated her consistent stance on pointing out breaches of FIFA and UEFA rules in relation to Israel’s conduct in Gaza.
She emphasized that the dialogue surrounding these infractions must persist, regardless of recent developments.
In a press conference held ahead of the Norway vs. Israel fixture—part of the European Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup—Klaveness addressed the ongoing situation. The match is set to take place on Saturday.
Responding to a question from a news agency regarding the situation in Gaza, Klaveness was asked: "As the head of the Norwegian FA, do you maintain your view that Israel should be banned from international football to be held accountable for the genocide it committed in Gaza? Or will everything that happened be forgotten now that a ceasefire has been declared?"
Klaveness stated that, like many others, they are genuinely pleased about the peace agreement being reached.
"I think it’s crucial to give it energy and momentum. Of course, we’re not directly involved in these talks, but we all have platforms," she noted.
She further emphasized, "The impression we want to leave is that we are genuinely happy about this development. More important than tomorrow’s match is that the bombings stop and the hostages return home."
Continuing her remarks, Klaveness explained that their previous discussions on sanctions and suspensions were tied specifically to violations of FIFA guidelines.
She clarified that while they are not indifferent to breaches of humanitarian or international laws, these matters enter the realm of politics.
"That’s why I’ve been very careful to highlight violations of FIFA and UEFA regulations, and why that discussion must continue," she concluded.
