Algeria Heads To World Cup After Defeating Somalia

(MENAFN- Brazil-Arab News Agency (ANBA)) São Paulo – Algeria is the 20th country to qualify for next year's FIFA World Cup. It is also the fifth Arab nation in the tournament, alongside Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, and Jordan. The spot was secured with a 3-0 victory over Somalia on Thursday (9) in Maputo, Mozambique.

As leaders of Group G in the African qualifiers, the Algerian team needed only a simple win to secure their spot in the 2026 tournament, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The victory was set in motion early in the match: forward Mohamed Amoura opened the scoring at six minutes, midfielder Riyad Mahrez doubled it at 18 minutes, and Amoura sealed the 3-0 win at 12 minutes into the second half.

With the victory, Algeria reached 22 points and can no longer be overtaken by second-placed Uganda, which beat Botswana 1-0 and now compete for one of the four playoff spots. This will be Algeria's fifth World Cup appearance, after participating in 1982, 1986, 2010, and 2014 in Brazil.

In addition to the five Arab nations and the three host countries, the following teams have also qualified for the World Cup: Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Uruguay, Paraguay, Colombia, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Uzbekistan, and Iran.
