IEA Cuts India's Projections For Solar Material Wafer & Polysilicon Production
This adjustment highlights concerns about India's near-term readiness to expand in the upstream segments of the solar manufacturing chain.
Previously, the IEA had expressed optimism about India's potential to develop strong wafer and polysilicon production capabilities, assuming rapid progress in infrastructure, technology, and supply networks.
However, recent assessments reveal that the progress has been slower than expected, prompting a more cautious outlook.
One major factor behind this revision is the ongoing challenge of ensuring access to high-purity raw materials required for polysilicon production, which is still dominated by a few global players.
Similarly, wafer manufacturing requires advanced equipment, precision processes, and substantial investment - areas where India is still building momentum.
The IEA's updated projections also take into account the risks of scaling up.
Delays in project execution, technology adoption, and funding availability have slowed India's transition from solar module assembly toward upstream manufacturing.
As a result, India may need to continue depending on imports of wafers and polysilicon for a longer period.
This downgrade underscores the need for stronger policy measures, targeted financial incentives, and global partnerships to accelerate domestic capacity building.
Industry experts believe that with the right support and strategic coordination between the government and private players, India can eventually reduce its import dependence and strengthen its position in the global solar value chain.
