(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW YORK, Oct 9 (KUNA) -- The Gulf Group at the United Nations (UN) said that the rule of law at both national and international levels is the basis of inter-state relations and essential guarantee of peace, security, development and respect of human rights.
This came in a speech delivered by Kuwaiti Diplomatic Attache Faisal Al-Fowzan late Wednesday on behalf of the Gulf Group at the Sixth Committee under the item entitled: The rule of law at the national and international levels.
He added that the GCC countries underline that the international order should be based on clear-cut and agreed rules, rather than selectivity and double standards, with a view to promoting international justice and equality.
He welcomed the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' recent report about the promotion of the security system in the field of the rule of law, calling for capitalizing on modern technologies and digital transition in ensuring transparency, accountability and justice.
At the national level, Al-Fozan affirmed that the GCC countries attach paramount significance to the development of their legislation and judicial establishments in a way that aligns with international commitments.
In this regard, the Kuwaiti diplomat noted that joint efforts had led to the conclusion of pan-Gulf agreement in the areas of justice, economy and environment, and contributed to boosting the efficiency of legal systems, principles of justice and rule of law.
He added that the GCC countries had continued working for empowering women, promoting judicial independence and upgrading legislative systems only out of their commitment to the principles of good governance, equality and equal opportunities.
Internationally, Al-Fozan reiterated the GCC countries' unwavering support for bolstering international justice and rejecting any breach of international law and UN Charter principles.
He reaffirmed the GCC countries' observation of international law, multilateralism and International Court of Justice (ICJ) verdicts as the primary tool of settling disputes by peaceful means.
He, further, emphatically condemned the recent Israeli occupation attack on Qatar as a blatant violation of its sovereignty, territorial integrity and international justice principles.
He also voiced the Gulf group's denunciation of Israeli occupying forces' policies and practices of starvation, displacement and genocide against the Palestinian people. (end)
