Macron Set to Tap New PM within Next Two Days
(MENAFN) Outgoing French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced Wednesday evening that President Emmanuel Macron is set to appoint a new prime minister within the next two days.
“I feel that a path forward is possible,” Lecornu told media, emphasizing that current circumstances permit the president to move ahead with the nomination.
“It's up to him to conduct the final consultations,” Lecornu added.
Facing pressure from opposition parties demanding early presidential elections to resolve the political deadlock, Lecornu stressed that “it was not the time to change the president.” He also confirmed that Macron will speak to the nation “in due course.”
Lecornu touched on critical policy issues, highlighting that “a path should be found” to restart discussions on pension reform. He cautioned that halting the reform could cost at least 3 billion euros (3.5 billion U.S. dollars) by 2027.
Regarding the draft budget for 2026, Lecornu indicated it might be brought before the cabinet as early as next Monday, noting that the proposal “will not be perfect” and will necessitate thorough debate.
Lecornu stepped down on Monday, just weeks after his appointment by Macron and a day after revealing part of his cabinet lineup.
