Profile Articles Activity

Dr Naida Redgrave is a practice-led academic, interested applying storytelling and narrative-based techniques in pursuit of representational equity across education and media.

She is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader of Digital Media and Communications at the University of East London, where she is also Chair of the Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) committee for the School of Arts and Creative Industries.

Her work frequently gravitates towards unearthing and representing under-explored lived experiences by way of screen/writing practice. Her PhD thesis, 'Muslimah: Decolonising and Re-Presenting Contemporary British Cinematic Representation of Black Muslim Women' (2022), explored the characterisation of this identity in British narrative cinema, implementing cultural theory and critical race scholarship to interpret culturally dominant representations of the 'other' on screen. The thesis then experimented with an approach to screen/writing which rehearsed a conscious undoing of colonial gaze in representing the Black Muslim woman for the screen.

Alongside Professor Dominic Hingorani, Naida developed the 'Conscious Creative Collaboration' framework, which builds on Black and postcolonial feminist theory, to articulate an approach to creative practice that is collaborative, and focuses on the facilitating of autonomy when voicing and representing the lived experiences of marginalised communities.

Naida employs radical empathy as part of her teaching and leadership practice, which encourages the active consideration of another person's point of view, even when in strong disagreement, to facilitate empathy, compassion and connection with others.

Naida's name rhymes with 'spider'.
