BMW Launches Recall of 12,491 Vehicles in South Africa

(MENAFN) BMW and South Africa’s National Consumer Commission (NCC) have jointly announced a significant recall affecting more than 12,000 vehicles from multiple BMW model lines, marking the company’s second large-scale recall in the country within months.

The recall targets key BMW models including the 3 Series (G20), 4 Series (G22), 5 Series (G30), Z4 (G29), X3 (G01), and X4 (G02), according to the NCC. BMW Group South Africa has identified a serious defect where water can infiltrate the starter motor, causing corrosion that may prevent the engine from starting, trigger electrical short circuits, and “in the worst case, this may result in a vehicle fire.”

“BMW has submitted that 12,491 vehicles are affected by the recall, and these vehicles were made available in South Africa from 2016,” the NCC confirmed. Vehicle owners have been advised to avoid driving through deep water that could submerge the starter motor and pose additional risks.

BMW remains the leading premium car brand in South Africa, with sales of 12,057 units in 2024. In the first quarter of 2025, around 3,200 BMW vehicles were sold, capturing a commanding 40.6% share of the premium market, according to media.

This recall adds to a growing trend of vehicle safety concerns across South Africa’s automotive market. As reported by an online news website, multiple manufacturers, including Ford, Toyota, and Land Rover, have faced recalls this year. Notably, Ford’s 2021–2022 Mustang models were recalled due to faulty low-pressure fuel pumps, and BMW’s X3 vehicles were cited for rear headrest failures in crashes. Volkswagen also recalled Polos produced between May 19 and May 23, 2025, due to rear axle detachment risks.

In a related development, Ford recently recalled over 1,000 Ranger and Everest models in South Africa in July, addressing engine stalling and other mechanical problems.

The series of recalls underscores urgent safety concerns amid a competitive and dynamic automotive sector in South Africa.
