Palestinian Detainee Dies in Israeli Custody

(MENAFN) A Palestinian prisoner being held at Ramon Prison in southern Israel has passed away following a severe decline in his health, according to prisoner support organizations.

In a collaborative announcement, the Commission of Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners Society, citing the Palestinian Civil Affairs Authority—which communicates with Israeli officials—confirmed the identity of the deceased as Ahmed Khdeirat, aged 22.

He was a resident of ad-Dhahiriya, a town located in the Hebron area of the southern West Bank.

The statement revealed that Khdeirat lost his life at Soroka Medical Center in Israel. He had been detained under the administrative detention system since May 2024.

In August, the Palestinian Prisoners Society had issued a warning about a “serious deterioration” in his condition.

At that time, the organization stated that “Khdeirat, detained in Israel’s Negev prison, is facing a severe decline in his health due to chronic diabetes and a skin disease (scabies),” also noting that his weight had decreased drastically to just 40 kilograms.

Administrative detention is a form of incarceration used by Israeli military authorities that permits holding individuals without formal charges or trial.

These detentions are issued for periods of up to six months and can be extended repeatedly.

The process relies on a so-called “secret file” compiled by Israeli intelligence, which neither the detainee nor their legal counsel is permitted to review.

Khdeirat’s situation reflects a broader crisis involving thousands of ailing Palestinian detainees in Israeli facilities.

Authorities have been accused of intentionally enforcing practices and restrictions that contribute to the deteriorating health—and, in some cases, death—of imprisoned individuals.
