Hundreds of hikers get saved by China from Mount Everest

(MENAFN) Chinese authorities have successfully rescued 580 hikers trapped on the eastern slopes of Mount Everest after a powerful snowstorm struck the region, according to state-run media reports on Wednesday.

Local officials said that the hikers, along with more than 300 others—including guides and yak herders—had safely reached Qudeng township and nearby areas, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.

The operation followed severe weather over the weekend, when heavy snowfall hit Tibet and Qinghai provinces. Local media reported earlier that at least one person had died and nearly 1,000 others were stranded as blocked roads and collapsed tents left many hikers isolated in freezing conditions.

The snowstorm began Saturday evening around Dingri County, disrupting hiking routes near Qudeng. In response, county authorities quickly organized rescue teams to restore communications and deliver emergency aid to those affected.

On Sunday, the Dingri County government announced the temporary closure of several tourist destinations—including the Mount Qomolangma scenic area—until conditions improved.
