580 Hikers Rescued from Mount Everest After Snowstorm

(MENAFN) Chinese officials have successfully evacuated 580 hikers from the eastern slopes of Mount Everest, according to state-run media reports on Wednesday.

The group, along with over 300 support personnel—including local guides and yak herders—have safely reached Qudeng township and surrounding areas, media reported, citing local government sources.

A severe snowstorm struck the Tibet and Qinghai regions over the weekend, leaving nearly 1,000 hikers stranded and resulting in at least one fatality, local media reported on Sunday. The storm caused road blockages and collapsed tents, complicating rescue efforts.

Heavy snowfall hit Dingri on Saturday evening, impacting trekkers along routes near Qudeng. In response, the Dingri County government promptly mobilized emergency teams to reestablish communications and carry out relief missions in the hardest-hit areas.

Due to the extreme weather, Dingri County authorities announced on Sunday the temporary closure of multiple tourist destinations, including the Mount Qomolangma scenic area.
