Putin To Visit Tajikistan For Talks On Afghanistan And Regional Security
Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to arrive in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, on Wednesday for a three-day visit focused on strengthening regional cooperation and addressing shared security concerns, particularly the situation in Afghanistan, the Kremlin announced.
According to Russia's TASS news agency, Putin will hold bilateral discussions with Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, with Afghanistan expected to be a key topic. The talks will likely cover border security, counterterrorism, and narcotics control-issues that have grown more urgent since the Taliban's return to power.
Putin is also expected to attend the second“Russia–Central Asia” summit, a high-level forum aimed at deepening economic, political, and defense cooperation between Moscow and regional partners. The meeting comes as Russia seeks to reinforce its influence in Central Asia amid rising competition from China and Western countries.
In addition, the Russian president will participate in the Council of Heads of State of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO). Member nations are expected to sign around 20 cooperation agreements covering trade, infrastructure, and energy development.
Tajikistan remains one of Russia's closest allies in Central Asia, particularly in matters concerning Afghanistan. Both countries share long-standing concerns over cross-border militancy and the potential spread of extremist networks into the wider region.
Officials in Moscow said Afghanistan will continue to be a“central focus” of regional dialogue, as Russia and Tajikistan work to strengthen joint security and humanitarian efforts. The Kremlin has repeatedly called for an inclusive government in Kabul and continues limited diplomatic engagement with the Taliban.
Putin's upcoming visit is expected to underscore Moscow's commitment to regional stability and renewed engagement with Central Asia. Observers say the discussions in Dushanbe could shape future cooperation on security, trade, and development across the region.
