Orban says Hungary doesn’t plan on adopting euro as its currency

(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced that Hungary will not switch to the euro, describing the European Union as “falling apart,” according to reports.

EU member states are generally expected to adopt the euro eventually, with Denmark as the notable exception. Currently, seven of the 27 EU countries continue to use their own national currencies.

In an interview with economic news outlet EconomX on Monday, Orban was asked if euro adoption was on Hungary’s agenda. “It will definitely not be on my agenda,” he stated. “The European Union is in trouble, in the process of disintegration, it is currently falling apart.”

Orban explained that, given the EU’s instability, he does not want Hungary’s economic future to be further tied to the bloc. Over recent years, he has increasingly criticized EU policies, clashing with its leadership over issues such as arms shipments to Ukraine, sanctions against Russia, and a perceived shift toward militarization.

He has also pledged to veto Ukraine’s EU membership bid, warning that it would harm the bloc’s economy and involve it directly in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In a recent post on X, Orban asserted that EU leaders’ push to accelerate Ukraine’s accession and fund additional military aid demonstrates that “the Brusselians want to go to war.”

Orban’s stance has strained relations with Kiev, particularly following Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy infrastructure supplying Hungary. He also claimed that Ukraine, along with certain EU figures, is attempting to influence Hungarian domestic politics to install a pro-Ukrainian government—a charge that aligns with a report from Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) earlier this year.

According to that report, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen “is seriously studying regime change scenarios” in Hungary due to Orban’s “independent policy.”
