Germany Plans Kabul Visit For Deportation Negotiations
Senior officials from Germany's Interior Ministry will travel to Kabul in October to hold direct talks with the Taliban on deporting Afghan nationals classified as criminals or security risks.
German media reported on Saturday, September 27, that the visit is part of a discreet operation designed to accelerate removals. The plan includes shifting deportations from chartered flights to regular commercial services in order to streamline the process.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said Berlin aims to make deportations more systematic and consistent.“We are negotiating directly in Kabul so that criminals and dangerous individuals can be returned on a regular basis,” he stated.
Germany has already carried out two deportation flights to Kabul through Qatari mediation. These marked the first returns since the fall of Kabul in 2021, when mass evacuations took place.
In the most recent operation, 81 Afghan migrants were expelled from Germany in July 2025, underscoring Berlin's determination to continue removals despite international concerns.
The decision has drawn criticism from rights groups, who argue that Afghanistan remains unsafe and that deportees face serious risks upon return. Refugee advocates insist that such policies undermine Germany's humanitarian commitments.
Analysts suggest the move reflects growing domestic pressure on Berlin to tighten migration controls. At the same time, direct engagement with the Taliban over deportations signals a pragmatic shift in Germany's approach to dealing with the Afghan authorities.
