School Collapse Claims Five Lives in Indonesia

(MENAFN) The death toll from the collapse of a school building in Indonesia’s East Java province has climbed to five, with 84 individuals still trapped beneath the debris, the regional rescue agency reported on Wednesday.

"Today we evacuated seven students, five of them alive and two dead," said Nanang Sigit, head of the East Java Search and Rescue Office, speaking to media.

Sigit warned that the building’s remains remain unstable, creating severe dangers for both rescue workers and those still trapped.

Authorities are currently evaluating whether to introduce heavy machinery into the rescue effort. "If there are still many survivors, we will not use it. But if no more living victims are found, heavy equipment may be deployed," he explained.

The tragedy struck on Monday at Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in the Sidoarjo district, where a building undergoing unauthorized renovations suddenly collapsed during afternoon prayers, the rescue office stated.

Hundreds of rescue personnel from multiple agencies have been dispatched to the scene.

Investigations into the cause of the collapse are ongoing.
