Polish Court Arrests Ukrainian On Suspicion Of Involvement In Nord Stream Sabotage

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) The detention is intended to facilitate the man's extradition to Germany, Judge Anna Wielgoliewska, presiding over the case, said, Ukrinform reports, citing Polish Radio .

"The court granted the prosecutor's office's request to temporarily arrest Volodymyr Z. for seven days," the judge said.

The court will also decide on the extradition of the suspect to Germany after reviewing the relevant documentation, a process that may take up to 100 days.

"Once the documents are received, further steps will be taken. In particular, the prosecutor's office will prepare an extradition request under the European Arrest Warrant," said Piotr Skiba, spokesperson for the District Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw.

The man was sought under a European Arrest Warrant issued by a German court. His lawyer confirmed that Volodymyr Z. had been detained in Poland.

In August, German investigators identified seven individuals they believe were responsible for the Nord Stream pipeline sabotage. One of them was detained in Italy shortly after being identified, and another, reportedly a Ukrainian serviceman, is believed to have died in the war. Germany issued arrest warrants for five Ukrainian citizens suspected of involvement in the sabotage.

The Ukrainian national detained in Italy, accused by German prosecutors of coordinating the sabotage of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines in 2022, denied any involvement during the court hearing.

The explosions on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines near the island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea in late September 2022 caused gas leaks at four sections of the pipelines within Denmark's and Sweden's exclusive economic zones. Russia accused Ukraine and the United States of the sabotage.

Ukrainian authorities and Polish officials have denied any involvement in the attacks.
