Zelenskyy Cautions on Power Loss at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed serious concerns over a “critical” situation at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which has been without its only remaining power connection for over a week.
In a video message delivered late Tuesday, Zelenskyy emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that an incident of this kind at the plant—currently under Russian control—has “never happened before.”
He explained that due to Russian bombardment, the facility has been severed from the main power supply and is now relying solely on backup diesel generators for electricity.
Zelenskyy described the condition at the site as “extraordinary,” revealing that one of the generators had already malfunctioned, and ongoing Russian shelling was making it impossible to restore the damaged power lines.
“And this is a threat to absolutely everyone,” he said, urging the global community to not remain indifferent to the unfolding crisis.
The Ukrainian leader stated he had convened a meeting with military officials and the Ministry of Energy, directing them to “bring the world’s full attention to this situation.”
According to reports from both Moscow and Kyiv on September 23, this marks the tenth power outage at the Zaporizhzhia facility since the outbreak of the conflict in February 2022.
It is also the most prolonged disruption experienced during that time.
Both Russia and Ukraine have placed blame on each other for the attacks causing the latest outage at what is recognized as the largest nuclear power station in Europe.
On Tuesday, the International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that the plant currently has eight operational emergency diesel generators, with an additional nine units on standby.
