Expert: Railway Sabotage Attempt To Intimidate Poles And Weaken Support For Ukraine
According to him, such provocations were to be expected, given that Poland is constantly subjected to intense cyberattacks from Russia. There have also been cases of arson in the country, which were officially proven to have been carried out by Russian special services.
“Therefore, the possibility of such hostile actions must be taken into account, as they may be repeated,” Onyszkiewicz stressed.
At the same time, he noted that in these specific cases, the damage caused is insignificant and can be quickly repaired. However, the relevant Polish authorities will now have to pay more attention to the protection of railway tracks, which may be the target of“further sabotage on an even larger scale.”
The expert assessed that the damage caused by the latest acts of sabotage on the Polish railway does not affect the supply of aid to Ukraine, as the explosion occurred on a side track, which is not the main one for such transport.
"The main line through which aid is delivered to Ukraine has not been affected by this sabotage, and we hope that this will not happen in the future, that we will be able to control it. This means that we must do everything possible to ensure the continuation of supplies that go by rail to Ukraine,“ the former Polish defense minister stressed.
Onyszkiewicz emphasized that there is no doubt that Russia's actions are also aimed at convincing Polish society that aid to Ukraine will”cost it dearly."
“The idea is to show that aid will cause various painful disruptions in the functioning of the Polish state, its institutions, and society. This is intended to weaken support for Ukraine,” the expert said.
He noted that this was also the goal of the massive attack by Russian drones on Poland on the night of September 10.
“These drones did not have a combat unit, but were a tactic of intimidation, saying, 'We can hurt you if you help Ukraine. But these are minor actions and they will not be able to intimidate Polish society,” Onyszkiewicz stated.
As reported by the agency, the act of sabotage on the Polish railway, which took place on Sunday on the track leading to Ukraine, was carried out by planting explosives. Experts at the scene collected evidence that should help to quickly identify the perpetrators.
