EU Commits Nearly USD683M to Empower Africa’s Renewable Energy Future

(MENAFN) The European Union has announced a significant €545 million (roughly $638 million) investment to support renewable energy initiatives throughout Africa. The funding is designed to improve electricity access, enhance regional power infrastructure, and accelerate the continent’s shift toward sustainable energy solutions.

The commitment was revealed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in a video address at the Global Citizen Festival, held in conjunction with the UN General Assembly, according to a statement released by the Commission on Saturday.

“The choices Africa makes today are shaping the future of the entire world. A clean energy transition on the continent will create jobs, stability, growth, and the delivery of our global climate goals,” von der Leyen said.

The EU emphasized that while Africa is endowed with abundant renewable energy resources, over 600 million people on the continent still live without electricity. The transition to clean energy, the statement noted, is crucial for fostering economic development, ensuring regional stability, and achieving global climate targets.

The funds will be allocated to a range of projects in countries including the Ivory Coast, Cameroon, the Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Ghana, the Central African Republic, Madagascar, Mozambique, and Somalia.
