Libya’s Eastern Parliament Pledges Unwavering Support for Sudan
(MENAFN) Libya’s eastern-based House of Representatives reaffirmed its unwavering backing for Sudan on Sunday amid ongoing regional instability, reported a Libyan news agency.
During a Benghazi meeting, Libya’s eastern Minister of African Affairs, Issa Abdulmajid, met with a delegation led by Sudanese Consul General Abdulrahman Mohamed Rahmatallah. Abdulmajid emphasized the “deep-rooted bilateral ties,” underscoring that “Sudan’s security and stability are integral to Libya’s own.”
The discussion included a review of existing bilateral agreements in sectors such as education, health, and agriculture. Abdulmajid called for “enhancing bilateral cooperation, especially regarding the two countries' shared border regions.”
Rahmatallah expressed gratitude for Libya’s humanitarian assistance, including support for displaced Sudanese citizens, praising “the historic depth of bilateral ties.” He reaffirmed the Sudanese community’s commitment to “respecting Libyan laws” and Sudan’s principle of “non-interference in other countries' internal affairs.”
The consul general indicated the consulate is preparing a report for Libya concerning Sudanese nationals residing there, with particular attention to those seeking voluntary return to safe areas in Sudan.
Other practical matters discussed included residency procedures for Sudanese students and broader challenges faced by Sudanese residents in Libya. Abdulmajid assured continued efforts to address these issues through ongoing coordination with Sudan.
Libya remains politically fractured since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that ousted former leader Muammar Gaddafi. The country is split between the UN-recognized Government of National Unity in Tripoli and an eastern administration supported by the Libyan National Army under commander Khalifa Haftar.
