California Gov. says Trump’s comments on climate change are “an embarrassment”
(MENAFN) According to reports, California Governor Gavin Newsom strongly criticized President Donald Trump on Wednesday for his statements at the United Nations, where Trump dismissed the threat of climate change. Newsom labeled the president’s comments an “embarrassment” and a “fraud.”
While speaking before global leaders at the UN General Assembly in New York, Trump dismissed climate science, referring to it as a “con job” and a “green scam.” He warned nations by saying, “If you don’t get away from this green scam, your country is going to fail,” while ridiculing renewable energy as a “joke” undermining the free world.
That same day, Newsom addressed an audience at a climate-focused event in New York, highlighting the devastating toll environmental disasters have taken on California. “Communities like Grizzly Flats and Paradise have been wiped off the map,” he said, pointing to towns destroyed by wildfires and floods.
“What an embarrassment. What a fraud,” the governor added. “I live in one of the most crisis-prone states in America, a state that’s seen lifestyles, places, traditions completely destroyed because of the reality of climate change. There’s no Republican or Democratic thermometer. It’s just reality.”
Newsom also alleged that Trump’s approach was politically motivated, stating: “This guy’s trying to rig the midterm elections.”
Reports note that Newsom has consistently been among Trump’s fiercest critics, clashing with him over issues such as climate action, immigration enforcement, and federal support during wildfire crises. Their political feud has only escalated since Trump returned to office in January 2025.
